AlVa Laser mOb research project launched: SITEC develops new coating solutions for industrial applications
News
In collaboration with CMMC GmbH and the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering at University of Technology Chemnitz, SITEC has launched the "AlVa Laser mOb" research project. The project aims to develop new aluminum-based materials and coatings for metallic surfaces. SITEC is responsible for application-oriented process development in laser cladding.
Official launch of joint research project
The research project, "AlVa Laser mOb," began successfully on March 5, 2026, at SITEC in Chemnitz. It focuses on researching and developing AMC materials for laser cladding and high-performance coatings for industrial applications.
Aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) are materials made more resistant and efficient through the addition of reinforcing particles.
These coatings are designed to protect metal components better from wear and corrosion. Thus, the project addresses a key requirement of many industrial applications in which surfaces are exposed to high mechanical and chemical stresses.
Collaboration along the value chain
The project focuses on taking a comprehensive view of the entire value chain: CMMC GmbH manufactures AMC semi-finished products, and the Chair of Materials and Surface Engineering at the University of Technology Chemnitz produces the powder using ultrasonic atomization. SITEC is responsible for processing the AMC powders for laser cladding and developing the resulting wear- and corrosion-resistant coating systems.
„We are particularly interested in the fact that the project bridges the gap between material development and practical coating applications. This allows us to evaluate new materials directly in the process and further develop their potential for industrial applications..“ – Dr. Mike Zinecker, Project Manager R&D
Outlook
In the next project phases, the focus will be on further developing materials technology, coordinating process steps, and examining produced layers. Thus, "AlVa Laser mOb" forms an essential basis for developing new coating solutions relevant to the industrial sector.
The project will run from 02/16/2026 to 02/28/2028. It is funded by Sächsische Aufbaubank (SAB) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) R&D project funding program, which receives funding from the European Union and co-financing from the Free State of Saxony.
